DoubleTree OKC Airport Shows Veterans Their Appreciation With a Hearty Homemade Meal!
Staff Members banded together to honor blind and visually-impaired veterans with this unique project!Oklahoma City, Okla. - January brought a special project to our hotel, that resonated deeply with several staff members!
The DoubleTree OKC Airport partnered with NewView Oklahoma, a private organization that aims to assist, supports and employ blind or visually-impaired citizens. A special group of those citizens, our Nation's veterans, are gathered for a complimentary monthly luncheon called VITAL, where they dine together and hear a speaker.
As soon as we heard about it, we jumped at the opportunity to provide a catered meal as a thank-you for their incredible service! The chef in our 4410 Restaurant Shaun Elliott was placed in charge of planning the menu and as a veteran himself, he took special pride in this task.
"Well, I know that the veterans and military folk I know love a good, hearty meal. On my tour in Iraq, I craved good meatloaf and greens, you know, really hearty food." He told the planning team after deliberating on the menu carefully, and we supported his decision 100 percent!
On January 17, Shaun arrived early to the kitchen to start preparations for the day. Assisted by Kitchen Manager Aaron Deal and Chef Hilary Hinds, the team prepped a deliciously fragrant meal of meatloaf, green beans, and rolls that had the whole hotel drooling! The food was then transported to the luncheon by several staff members who stayed to serve the veterans and dine with them.
Our hotel shuttle transported Aaron, Hilary, Chief Engineer Spencer Standley, Front Desk Agent Tamica Walker, Maintenance Tech David Sanchez and Houseman Ricky Rios to the event where they prepped plates for the veterans alongside the staff of NewView Oklahoma. The event was a huge success, seating about 30 veterans, their caretakers and companions (including some furry four-legged ones!) for a tasty hour of good food and company.
After the event, Program Director was sure to follow up with a touching thank you:
"I wanted to thank you so much for arranging to serve our veterans this week. The food was delicious!! A lot of veterans said it was the best meatloaf they’ve had! Thank you to the volunteers who prepared the meal and those who came out to serve. We all greatly appreciate it."
The Doubletree OKC Airport supports our nations military past and present and is happy to find any way to show our support. Shaun's praise-winning meatloaf seemed like just the ticket for Oklahoma City's veterans!
